Full steam ahead
You have to see the kids' eyes when they watch the small train in the distance get closer and finally appear as the colossus it really is, with its whistle and its plume of steam. Because there's only one track, the locomotive has no other choice but to move forward and then to back up. Mind you, it makes no difference from a passenger's point of view. For part of the ride, we see backyards full of flowers (I would grow flowers too if people were to see my backyard every weekend!), and a few commercial plots. Then comes the countryside with farms, cows, cornfields and trees. I'm sure it is lovely during the fall colours. At the end of the line, we wait a few minutes before heading back. "We're waiting because all the wheels must be reinstalled for us before we head in the other direction" the conductor seriously explains. It takes the kids a few seconds to wrap their minds around that one!
