The Four Seasons Centre is the permanent home of the Canadian Opera Company (and the National Ballet of Canada). Their excellent website offers an excellent introduction to their operas, to help you choose the most interesting one for your family. For an initiation, I recommend taking advantage of their FREE Concerts by Series. This season, 10 of the 22 concerts offered in the Vocal Series were performed by the COC Ensemble Studio (COC's training program for young opera professionals). If you want a full production, the opera experience starts in the entrance hall with its "world's longest free-span glass staircase". The horseshoe-shaped auditorium is equally impressive, going so high up I was told some people get vertigo in the highest rows. I tried the different levels and can confirm that you see quite well from every seat in the room, which makes it worth trying to get their $25 Rush Tickets, or $12 Standing Tickets sold at the Four Seasons' box office at 11 a.m. on the day of the performance. It could mean a very special one-on-one outing with an older kid.
