The WeeFestival is on from August 11-13 2017, with a special Family Day on Monday May 22, filled with FREE activities!
The Artscape Wychwood Barns are a sure bet whenever they organize a family event, thanks to the outdoor playground attached to the heritage buildings. Its cute splash pad is set against a unique background of vintage barn doors and a rainbow chimney. Two shelters create shadow over parts of the large sandy area, equipment with simple structures that do the job. Inside the main building, historic photos remind us that "barns" doesn't stand for "animal barns" but rather for what used to be a streetcar maintenance facility. Artscape redeveloped the space into a community cultural hub which opened in 2008, involving the three levels of government. (Don't you love it when they play nice together?) The place is home to Theatre Direct (offering early years theatre and organizing the annual WeeFestival celebrating theatre and culture for early years).
On the south part of the premises is a large stretch of grassy mounds (the perfect place to initiate your little ones to the fun of rolling down the hill). In the south-west corner, next to the mural of welcoming colourful characters, is the entrance to the tiny Learning Garden. Along Barn #5, you'll also see small community gardens with hand-made signs refering to different countries (part of the Global Roots project). There's also a Sheltered Garden with outdoor fire oven. he park includes an off-leash dog section. See the photo gallery of my visit of their Boo! At the Barns event during Halloween 2014!
